HISTORY OF THE SHEGUIANDAH UNITED CHURCH BUILDING

HISTORY OF THE SHEGUIANDAH METHODIST CHURCH BUILDING

By 1875 the building of the first Methodist Church in Sheguiandah was begun on one-half acre of land costing twenty dollars.  It was built chiefly by Mr. Adam Trotter and Mr. Robert Lewis who cut timbers and erected the building after their day's work and in their spare time. When the building was ready for plastering, Mr. Trotter sold a cow to pay the mason. By 1877 the Church had been completed, debts paid and a revival held.

For the first several years the Church served the community in the double capacity of a place of worship on Sunday and as a school house on week days.

In October 1893 it was decided to build a new Church. By February 1895 the new Church was ready for dedication. This is the same Church which serves the Sheguiandah United Church congregation today.

Its gothic windows are stained glass of red, blue and frosted white and cast beautiful shadows at morning service.

In 1949 the United Church at Honora that had been closed was purchased, taken down in sections and reassembled at the back of the Sheguiandah Church to be used as a hall. The hall was opened and dedicated June 26, 1952.
